Direct Access to Endoscopy

Our direct access to endoscopy service allows your GP to refer you directly for a gastroscopy or colonoscopy. This helps reduce waiting times and allows the procedure to be performed promptly. All direct to endoscopy referrals are first triaged by our gastroenterologist to assess suitability. Generally a full consultation is required for patients with other significant medical conditions affecting the heart, lungs or kidneys.

Potential indications for direct access to endoscopy

    • Positive faecal occult blood test or positive National Bowel Cancer Screening Program Test
    • Rectal bleeding (blood noticed in the stool, toilet or toilet paper when passing stool)
    • Iron deficiency +/- anaemia
    • Surveillance procedures for follow up of previous polyps, gastrointestinal cancer or Barrett's oesophagus
    • Family history of bowel cancer, stomach cancer or oesophageal cancer
    • Dysphagia or difficulty swallowing
